Vigan: From Old Trading Town to Modern City

   

  Vigan, located on the western coast of Luzon in the Philippines, has a rich history dating back to the 16th century. Originally established as a Spanish trading post, it became a significant center for commerce and culture during the colonial era. Over time, Vigan evolved from a municipality into a vibrant city, blending its historical charm with modern development.

      Before achieving city status, Vigan was a municipality known for its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture and cobblestone streets. Its unique townscape, reflecting a fusion of Asian and European influences, led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This recognition highlighted Vigan’s importance as one of the few remaining examples of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia.

      In 2001, Vigan was officially recognized as a city, marking a new chapter in its history. This transition spurred economic growth and development, attracting tourists and investors alike. Today, Vigan stands as a testament to the successful preservation of cultural heritage while embracing progress, offering a unique blend of historical significance and modern amenities.

Fresh Start, Better Me

They say the new year is a chance to start fresh  to leave behind what didn’t work and focus on becoming better. As 2025 begins, I’m setting goals to help me grow in different areas of my life. I wish to be more productive, kind, and happy. I want my family to stay healthy and have more fun moments together. I also hope for new experiences, like traveling and meeting new people. But most importantly, I want to focus more on my studies, improve my skills, and understand myself better this year.

One of my main goals is to live a healthier and more balanced life. I  plan to manage my time better, This way, I can get things done without feeling overwhelmed and still have time to relax.

Lastly, I want to take better care of myself and strengthen my relationships. Taking time for myself  whether by reading, doing a hobby, or just relaxing is important for my mental health. I also want to be more open with my family and friends and build stronger bonds with them. This year, I’m excited to meet new people, learn new things, and continue becoming a better version of myself. Here’s to a fresh start in 2025!

A Christmas Dream Come True

 

They say dreams come true when you least expect it, and for me, that moment came during the most wonderful time of the year — Christmas! My family and I went on an unforgettable trip to South Korea, and it turned out to be the best holiday ever. From seeing places I’ve only dreamed of to making precious memories with my family, this trip was nothing short of magical.

Our adventure started with a visit to a place I’ve been dreaming of — the HYBE building! It’s the home where all my favorite K-pop idols where, and just standing outside gave me chills of excitement. Though we couldn’t go inside since we didn’t have a reservation, it didn’t matter. I was standing right there, seeing it with my own eyes and breathing the same air as my idols. That night, something even more magical happened — I saw snow for the first time! It was like a scene from a winter K-drama. The snowflakes falling gently from the sky made me feel like I was living in a dream.

The nextday, we visited Gyeongbokgung Palace, one of Korea’s most famous landmarks. Before heading there, we rented hanboks (traditional Korean clothing), and they even styled our hair to complete the look. Walking around the palace, I felt like I had traveled back in time to a royal era. On our way there, we passed by a rally, which was a bit nerve-wracking, but the palace made it all worth it. The beauty of the palace, combined with the chilly air, made the experience unforgettable — even if it was freezing.

Our third day was full of adventure! We traveled for an hour to go skiing, and it was my first time. At first, I was nervous, but it ended up being so much fun! I even met new people along the way, and despite the cold, the thick layers of clothing kept me warm. After skiing, we visited the famous Starfield Library. If you’ve ever watched Korean dramas, you’ve probably seen it. Walking into that library felt like stepping into a movie scene — rows of towering bookshelves and so many people enjoying the cozy atmosphere. It was a dream come true!

 The next day, we traveled again to visit the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) — the border between North and South Korea. It was such a powerful experience to see soldiers standing guard and learn about the country’s history. We even went inside one of the tunnels that North Koreans secretly dug during the war. It was both fascinating and a little scary, but it gave me a deeper understanding of Korea’s past and the importance of peace.

  The most special part of the trip was Christmas Eve. We celebrated Christmas together as a family, and I felt our bond grow stronger. My stepdad, stepsister, and I became closer, and I realized that this trip wasn’t just about visiting places — it was about creating memories with the people I love. It made my heart so full, knowing we were making this holiday one we’d always cherish.

This Christmas holiday felt like a dream brought to life — from stepping into my dream country to exploring beautiful places that seemed straight out of a movie. But beyond the sights and adventures, it was the love and laughter shared with my family that made it truly unforgettable. It reminded me that while dreams do come true, the best moments are those spent with the people we hold closest. That’s what made this Christmas the most magical one yet!

A Step Towards a Safer Future

   

 This campaign is a powerful reminder that women and children deserve to live free from harm and abuse. One important law that ensures their protection is the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004 (RA 9262). This law shields women and children from abuse, whether at home, in relationships, or anywhere else.

     

 Over time, more laws have been introduced to strengthen these protections. Let’s look at two of them: RA 11648, which improves laws against rape, and RA 11862, which fights human trafficking.

RA 11648: Raising the Age of Consent to Protect Young People

RA 11648 updated the Anti-Rape Law of 1997 to give children and teens better protection from abuse, In 2022. One of its biggest changes was raising the age of sexual consent from 12 to 16 years old. This means that if an adult has sexual relations with someone under 16, it is considered rape, even if the younger person agrees.

     Why is this important? It’s because kids and teens under 16 are still growing and may not fully understand the consequences of their actions. This law recognizes that they need more protection to prevent abuse and exploitation. By raising the age of consent, the law helps keep them safe.

TAG, you're it: My 2nd Quarter Adventure

 I have learned a lot in this 2nd quarter as I learned and gained new knowledge and looked into new topics. Lessons were interesting and challenging, encouraging me to get better at things like coding. Every task we completed built on the one before it, which made it clearer to me how important patience and focus are to learning new ideas. I discovered that teamwork can make even the most difficult tasks simpler to manage, whether I'm working alone or with classmates.

Of course , there were difficulties this quarter. Although some tasks needed more time and effort than others, I finally breathed after overcoming those challenges. I came to see that never giving up is the answer to success and that committing mistakes is a necessary part of learning. All in all, this quarter set me for even bigger challenges ahead by teaching me important lessons about growth and resilience in addition to new information.

Elpidio Quirino: The President Who Rebuilt a Nation with Hope and Dedication

 

     Elpidio Quirino, the Philippines' sixth president, led the country during its recovery from World War II. Quirino was born on November 16, 1890, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, to a humble family. His father was a farmer and his mother was a schoolteacher. Considering his tough childhood, Quirino excelled in school and graduated as a lawyer in 1915.

    His government career began in 1919, he was chosen to represent Ilocos Sur. He eventually became a senator and served in important roles such as Secretary of Finance and Secretary of the Interior. Following World War II, he was appointed Vice President under Manuel Roxas. When President Roxas died in 1948, Quirino became President.

     As President, Quirino focuses on rebuilding the country. He helped establish the Central Bank of the Philippines to help grow the economy, build schools and homes, and fought to give farmers additional land. Though some have criticized his leadership, his attempts to bring back peaceful to the country are evident.Elpidio Quirino died on February 29, 1956, yet his contributions to the country are remembered. His life shows how hard effort and dedication to society can help a country rise from a dark era.

Celebrating Indigenous Peoples Month and 27 Years of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA)

      This October, we honor the rich culture, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) as we celebrate Indigenous Peoples Month 2024. The theme, “Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalan,” reminds us to value, protect, and recognize the wisdom and heritage of indigenous communities. The Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA), a statute that protects indigenous rights to land, culture, and self-governance, is also celebrating its 27th anniversary this year.

     Indigenous peoples are crucial to the preservation of our culture and the protection of the environment. By respecting and preserving their knowledge, we not only protect their culture but also find solutions to problems like climate change. Activities like cultural shows, storytelling, and workshops help spread awareness and appreciation for their unique contributions.

     Despite these celebrations, many IPs still face challenges, such as losing their lands and being excluded from important decisions. While the IPRA helps protect their rights, more work is needed to ensure fairness and equality. This month, let us celebrate and honor Indigenous Peoples by preserving their culture, protecting their rights, and recognizing their importance in building a better future for our nation.
